Why this room is hard

There is no reservation system. There are owners.

Rao's has held the same corner of East Harlem since 1896, and the dining room has roughly ten tables. Since the late 1970s those tables have belonged to regulars who hold them on standing nights, week after week, year after year. There is no online platform and no public waitlist. A seat opens only when a table holder gives up their night, which is why the owner who turned everyone away earned the name Frankie No.

A room like this does not answer a booking form. It answers a name it already knows. We hold relationships with the people who decide who eats, we hear when a standing table comes free, and we are positioned for the nights the public will never see listed anywhere. We put your name in the one place that matters here, the memory of the room.

The reservations are not for sale at any price. We just happen to know who is holding them.

Questions

Rao’s, the FAQ.

How do I get a reservation at Rao’s?

Name Rao’s and the night you want. We book it on your account the instant a table opens or a cancellation appears, and you only pay if we actually get it.

Why is Rao’s so hard to book?

Rao’s is one of the most in-demand tables in East Harlem. Prime-time seats are claimed within seconds of release, and many never reach the public at all, so refreshing on your own rarely works.

When do Rao’s reservations open up?

Rao’s releases tables on a set schedule, and seats also reappear when other guests cancel. We watch both around the clock and move the instant one opens, so you never have to refresh at midnight.

How much does it cost to book Rao’s through The Elusive List?

One flat fee, charged only when we confirm your table. No table, no charge. Sign in to see the exact fee for Rao’s.

What to expect

Five steps, start to seated.

01

You ask.

Tell us the night, the time window, the party size. Two minutes on this page. Card on file, not charged.

02

We confirm the request.

An operator reviews the request, checks the room, and sends a confirmation that we are working it. Usually within thirty minutes.

03

We work the room.

We reach the floor manager directly, by phone or by text, depending on the night. We make the call.

04

You are confirmed.

We charge the card and send your confirmation — the time and the name to give the host.

05

You eat.

Walk into Rao’s, give your name at the host stand, sit down. The room takes it from there. We do not see you again until the next request.
